What is Modbus?

Modbus is a simple, widely deployed request-response (client/server) industrial communication protocol published by Modicon in 1979.

Its data model rests on four tables: coils, discrete inputs, input registers and holding registers. The common forms are Modbus RTU over serial lines (with CRC16) and Modbus TCP over Ethernet.

Modbus has no authentication or encryption and carries no meaning (unit, scaling, byte order); you need the device documentation to map a register address to a real quantity. That is why Modbus data is usually modeled and contextualized in a data platform. Modbus TCP is supported in HighByte Intelligence Hub through an OPC UA gateway.
