What Is a Unified Namespace (UNS)? One Source of Truth for Factory Data

A Unified Namespace is an architecture where enterprise data is published into one meaningful namespace. We explain how it removes point-to-point integration sprawl, how to build one and what to watch for.

Frequently asked questions

What is Industrial DataOps?

Industrial DataOps is the practice of connecting, modeling, conditioning and managing OT (operational technology) data at the source. The goal is to turn raw data from systems such as PLCs, SCADA and MES into contextual, standardized data that analytics, AI, cloud and enterprise systems can use with confidence. HighByte Intelligence Hub applies this approach with a code-free platform.

What is a Unified Namespace (UNS)?

A UNS is an architecture in which plant and enterprise data is published into a single, meaningful namespace (typically on an MQTT broker with an ISA-95-style hierarchy). Systems connect to this shared structure instead of to each other point to point, which reduces the number of integrations and the maintenance load. See the UNS entry in our glossary for details.

Which protocols and deployment options does HighByte Intelligence Hub support?

It connects to sources such as OPC UA, MQTT (v3.1.1 and v5) and Sparkplug, SQL, REST/HTTP, Modbus TCP, files and the PI System through native connectors. It runs at the edge on gateways, on-prem servers and in the cloud, and installs on bare metal, a virtual machine or a container. See our product page and HighByte’s documentation for the current connector list.

How is OT cybersecurity different from IT security?

In OT environments the priority is usually availability and safety before confidentiality. Legacy systems can be sensitive to patching and active scanning, and many industrial protocols were designed without authentication in mind. That is why passive visibility, network segmentation and standards such as IEC 62443 are central to OT security.

Where should I start with digital transformation?

First clarify your current state and goals, then start with a small pilot. The free IT/OT readiness assessment in the IT Hub (12 questions) is a quick way to see your priorities; for a step-by-step approach, read our digital transformation roadmap article.
