Register & Data Type Converter

Read two Modbus registers as float32, int32 and uint32 in all four byte orders, or turn a value back into registers.

Enter decimal (0–65535) or hex with 0x. Register 1 is the register that arrives first on the wire. The default example is the float32 encoding of 22.5.

Use the row that matches the byte order in your device’s documentation. If you are unsure, read a known value (for example 22.5) and see which row gives the right answer.

Why are there four byte orders?

Modbus registers are 16 bits wide and each register is sent big-endian (high byte first). A 32-bit value (float32, int32) is split across two consecutive registers, but the standard does not say in which order the two registers are filled. Vendors chose differently, so a value may be stored as “ABCD”, “CDAB”, “BADC” or “DCBA”:

    • ABCD — big-endian: high register first
    • CDAB — registers swapped (word swap); common on many PLCs and meters
    • BADC — the bytes within each register swapped (byte swap)
    • DCBA — fully little-endian

The safest way to find the right order is to read a measurement whose value you know and see which row of the table gives a sensible result. A wrong order usually produces a huge, tiny or NaN float32.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does a float32 take two registers?

A float32 is a 32-bit IEEE 754 single-precision number and a Modbus register is only 16 bits, so the value is split across two consecutive registers and the request names the address of the first one.

What is the difference between int16 and uint16?

The same 16 bits are read as 0–65535 in uint16 and as −32768…32767 in int16 (two’s complement). Values from 0x8000 upwards are negative in int16.

Are the registers I enter sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
