OEE

–

  • Availability–Run time ÷ planned time
  • Performance–(Ideal cycle × total count) ÷ run time
  • Quality–Good count ÷ total count

Where did the planned time go?

  • Fully productive time
  • Quality loss
  • Speed loss
  • Downtime

    How is OEE calculated?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) shows in a single percentage how effectively equipment uses its planned production time. It is made of three ratios that are multiplied:

    • Availability = run time ÷ planned time (run time = planned time − unplanned downtime)
    • Performance = (ideal cycle time × total count) ÷ run time
    • Quality = good count ÷ total count

The breakdown bar shows the same calculation in time: the planned time is the sum of fully productive time, quality loss, speed loss and downtime, so you can see at a glance where improvement effort should go.

    Reading the result

OEE is a tool for making losses visible, not a target on its own. What counts as the ideal cycle time (machine design speed or best historical value) and whether planned stops are included must be the same across lines; otherwise the lines cannot be compared. This tool does the arithmetic on the values you enter and does not check data quality.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why can performance exceed 100%?

If the ideal cycle time was entered longer than it really is, or counts were over-reported, performance goes above 100%. It is a sign to review the inputs, and the tool warns you when it happens.

Do planned stops (breaks, maintenance) count?

It depends on your organisation’s definition. If you subtract planned stops from the planned production time they stay out of OEE; if you do not, they lower availability like unplanned downtime. What matters is that the definition is the same on every line.

What is a good OEE value?

There is no single valid target; the range changes with product, process and definition. The most meaningful comparison is your own line’s history under the same definition.

Is the data I enter stored?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser; no value is sent to or stored on a server.
